For many students at Eastern New Mexico University, the student newspaper and television stations may be the only media sources they are familiar with. However there are two other media sources on campus -- KZIA and KENW / KMTH-FM.

KZIA is a student radio association and KENW / KMTH-FM is a non-commercial radio station affiliated with Public Radio.

The constitution and bylaws of KZIA state that KZIA is to offer students practical and professional experience in operating and managing a radio station.

Christopher Stasheff, an Associate Professor at the Communication Department said the station went off air when the transmitter was taken which made students lose interest.

Stasheff said to revive the station he has used KZIA as a laboratory for his radio station operations class for the past six years.

Program Manager for KZIA Nick Burke says about 20 students are currently volunteering at the station.

KZIA has existed for 12 years and was initially wired to the dormitories but is now on the ENMU Web site, broadening its target audience to dormitories, offices, and any other place that campus network runs, such as the Cannon air force base.

Programs include disc jockey shows, sports and news briefs and Chinese Hour. Commercials are not allowed but public service announcements and underwriting announcements are welcome.

As a non-commercial station, source of funding is through donations therefore everyone is welcome to donate to the station by emailing radio@enmu.edu.

KENW / KMTH-FM, also non-commercial, serve virtually all of Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. According to Jim Lee, news and public affairs director for nine years, varieties of programs on the station include The Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Community Calendar and Today in History. Lee said announcements to the station have to be events of non-profit enterprises.

Tune in to KZIA on www.enmu.edu/Radio or KENW /KMTH on 89.5 FM and you are assured to learn something new.
