The Student Regent position for the 2009-2011 term is now open for Eastern New Mexico University students who are qualified and interested in the management and control of the university. Applications are due at the Associated Students of Eastern New Mexico University office by 5p.m. on Oct. 24.

The Board of Regents "has complete power and control over the university," according to the ENMU Web site. The Board consists of five regents, one of whom is a member of the student body of the university. The powers of the Board include the ability to sue, to make contracts, to hire the president and determine his salary, as well as to hire faculty, determine what will be taught and decide the faculty's salary, according to the site.

"The student regent has the same exact authority and responsibility that all the other regents have. In other words, they vote on issues of tuition increases, of program approval, and anything that (is) important to (the) University …" said Steven Gamble, president of ENMU. "They are very important because they are the students' voice on the Board of Regents."

Students who apply for the regent position must meet several qualifications. The must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA, 30 credit completed before fall 2008, attend ENMU during Fall 2007 and spring 2008, also must be able to serve a two-year term from spring 2009 to fall 2011. Official copy of ENMU transcript, a current resume and two essays are required for application.

According to Anthony R. Garcia, president of ASENMU, interviews are set for Oct 30 - 31. Then, the recommended regent will be sent to Gamble. The regent must finally be appointed by Gov. Bill Richardson.

At a forum held by ASENMU last Wednesday, Charles Britton, current student regent for ENMU and Tracy Henderson, a former student regent described their past work experiences, specific duties and functions, as well as the benefits they earned on a personal level from their work on the Board.
