Here's the chance to put up or shut up.
The Eastern New Mexico University football team and Coach Mark Ribaudo are looking for a kicker. Ribaudo began spring practice Monday looking for a placekicker to attempt PATs this upcoming season.
Hobbs native Adam Richards held the position last season, but a back injury forced Richards out as the Greyhound kicker. Ribaudo has spoken with ENMU men's soccer coach Harold Munoz (no relation) about the soccer team members trying out for the team.
The solution to use a soccer player is one that may interfere with the player's soccer schedule since football and fútbol are both fall sports. I've heard snickers around campus about the football team and have even written things about them that students didn't agree with.
So, now I'm stepping up and lacing my Nikes for a shot at kicking PATs for the football team. We should all take the chance. Our football team is in need of someone - preferably a student at ENMU - to step up and help.
There are six home games next season and one of the road games is the Wagon Wheel Game in Canyon, Texas. That means only three weekends will be devoted to traveling. I can't kick a ball into the air, but I'm sure there are students on campus with NCAA eligibility left that can send a football through the uprights from 30 yards out.
I doubt that I nail one PAT, but I'm sure it will make for a good laugh with Ribaudo and the team. Plus, if I look like an idiot it won't be the first time. I can always just return to my dreams of nailing the game-winning 3-pointer against Duke in Chapel Hill, N.C.
