Many students feel unconvinced of these links.

Senior Michael Harman, a communication major with a journalism emphasis, said he could see from Thursday's meeting, a good portion of communication majors weren't in support of the move. Harman said he attended the meeting to make sure students were being heard.

Communication Major Erin Griffith also wants to know that students are being considered in the decision. The senior, who plans to graduate in December, said she hopes the department will improve and be better than it was during her time in it.

Though Griffith won't be around to see the results of the planned changes, she said she thinks students develop a connection to their program. She wants to ensure that the communication department is around for future generations.

Laurenz said having the communication program in the fine arts department is not unique. He said it also wouldn't be the first time for that arrangement here at ENMU.

Laurenz said the decision is not yet official because it has to go through proper approvals, but it is something the University wants to pursue. Laurenz said, if approved, the changes would begin in the fall semester and end the following spring in 2010.

Despite any changes that might take place to the department, Laurenz said current students should not suffer any setbacks to their degree plans or graduation dates.

"ENMU is committed to finishing you out under the catalog you started with," he said.
