Coughs, sneezes, fever, and chills, these are just some of the symptoms of the flu. With flu season, rapidly approaching ENMU is taking precautions to keep its students healthy.
Beginning in early October ENMU Health Services will be offering annual flu shots for students free of charge. Eastern will, also, be offering the H1N1 vaccine as soon as it is made available.
According to Kristin Kuhlmann, Health Services Nurse Practitioner, information about the H1N1 virus was offered to students during Dawg Days and to faculty during orientations meetings.
Kuhlmann said, "We also have posted information on the ENMU Website, and we will continue to provide information and handouts to any class or group who requests it."
According to Kuhlmann, Health Services made up over 1000 flu kits for students living in the Residence Halls.
"If a student has these symptoms," a fever of 100 degrees, a cough, and some may have a sore throat, Kuhlmann says, "they should contact their RA if they live in a residence hall or call Health Services at 575-562-2321." During this fall semester there will be someone available to answer calls 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
There will also be various locations off campus offering flu shots, Kuhlmann said. These shots however will not be free of charge. Local doctor's offices and pharmacies' shots cost will depend on the student's insurance coverage and on which business they go to.
According to Kuhlmann, there will not be any cost for the H1N1 vaccine for those who qualify for the vaccine based on priority. Kuhlmann states that the list of priorities includes, "Students who are under 25, pregnant, or under 49 with a medical condition such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease will be first in line for the H1N1 vaccine."
There have been two confirmed cases of H1N1 among ENMU students. According to the campus wide e-mail that was sent out and the ENMU Website, these students have been sent home and classes will continue.
Health Services warns students and faculty to take the necessary precautions against spreading the virus, washing hands frequently, covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and then throw the tissue away, and disinfect all keyboards and other services touched frequently.
