Sept. 17 ENMU's Social Issues group from Associated Students Activities Board will be hosting "Hats on Day."

According to Tracy Henderson, the Director of Student Activities and Organizations, "Hats on Day" is a nation wide event helping to bring child cancer awareness.

September is Child Cancer Awareness month, Henderson said, and "Hats on Day" is one way the students and faculty at ENMU can help bring awareness and make a difference. In addition to wearing a hat on Sept. 17, yellow ribbons will be for sale in the Campus Union lobby on Sept. 16 and 17 for 25 cents.

According to Henderson, the theme is "Wear a Hat Make a Difference." The day of wearing hats is to help bring support and compassion to the children and their families who are affected by cancer, create awareness, and to raise funds which will go to improving quality of life for the child affected by cancer.

All money raised, Henderson said, will be donated to the Foundation for Children with Cancer in honor of Lance Fletcher, son of ENMU employee Carol Fletcher.

"We're hoping to bring awareness to this month," Henderson said. "We're hoping to get people thinking about it, because our Eastern family was affected by Carol's family being affected."

Childrenwithcancer.org reported that every year approximately, "12,400 children and teens are newly diagnosed with cancer, and one in four children die."

According to the Website, "Hats on Day" was founded in 1995 at a school in St. Louis, Missouri when four sixth-grade classmates of Kevin Beffa, who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins's Lymphonma, decided to wear a hat in support of Beffa's fight against cancer, which due to his medical treatments led to the loss of his hair.

After his death, the Website said, the children continued the tradition to help bring awareness to child cancer. According to the Website, during 2008-2009's school year "Hats on Day" raised more than 350,000 dollars from schools participating in the event nation wide.

"We are asking every student, every faculty member to wear a hat that day (Sept. 17)," Henderson said.
