Of all the artists J.T. Berry received the title best of show for his piece "Fascist Food". Unfortunately Berry was unavailable for comment due to the fact that he had to work during the reception.
Other students' artwork recognized includes Amanda Czuprynski's "Japanese Ink Work" with 2nd place, and Zhongming Jiang's "Soaring" with 3rd place. Elijah Nieto's "A Lack of Self Worth", Joshua Lees' "An Artists Libido", and Kara Bratcher's "Fatal Suicide" all receiving honorable mention.
There are many different types of artwork on display in the Runnels Gallery. Some are ink, or ink and brush works while others are digital or sculpture pieces. Among the attending crowd was Wendel Sloan, the Director of Media Relations here at Eastern New Mexico University, who commented that he was very impressed with the students work. Sloan also said there is "A lot of variety and creativity and (it is) interesting to see what students can do."
There were many students in attendance at the reception. One student, Luanne Bisconti, who tries to attend all of the Gallery shows, stated that her favorite piece in the show is "The Ugliness That is Created by Shame". "There's a lot of hidden details," Bisconti said about the piece, "(and) A lot of talented people."
Mario Aguirre, a beginning art major, was also in attendance. Aguirre who some day hopes to have his own work shown in the Runnels Gallery said that his favorite piece was the "Blue Lady". Aguirre said, "It has a European style. Kind of Van Goghish."
Matthew Beard, a presenting artist in attendance, expressed his liking to pull his inspiration for his artwork from nature while Amanda Czuprynski said she pulled her inspiration for her piece "" from Japanese anime. Beard also stated he "Learned a lot from these three (pieces)" and that he wants them to be part of a 12 piece collection when he is done.
About half way through the reception Christopher Calderon, the gallery's director, called everyone's attention to the gallery entrance. Calderon proceeded to thank the Chair of the Art department, Catherine Jennings, as well as others for their support of and cooperation with the show.
Following Calderon stated that the Runnels Gallery is a place for students "To showcase their work." Then it was time for the announcement of the best of show piece and honorable mentions as well as introducing attendees to the artists themselves.
